Living With Hearing Loss

There are lots of measures you can take to adapt to reduced hearing. These include:

• Paying attention to a speaker's gestures, facial expressions, posture, and tone of voice

• Making sure you are within a few feet of the person you are talking with

• Using assistive listening devices or hearing aids

Treating Hearing Loss

The treatment that's prescribed for hearing loss will depend on its cause and type. With many types of conductive hearing loss, correcting an underlying problem (such as removing earwax or treating an infection) may return your hearing.

Sensorineural hearing loss, like that caused by aging and noise exposure, is usually permanent and is treated with hearing aids or other assistive listening devices. It's also helpful to learn strategies and techniques for coping with reduced hearing.
