The Day Before Your Surgery / Procedure
Learning Your Surgery/Procedure Time
We request that you call the Strong Surgical Center at 585-275-8256 after 2:30 p.m. the day before your scheduled surgery/procedure to verify the time of your expected arrival at the site of care and your scheduled surgery/procedure. Patients with scheduled surgery on Monday are asked to call the Center the preceding Friday afternoon. If you are scheduled for surgery/procedure the day following a holiday, we ask that you call the Center on the last weekday prior to the holiday. You may request to speak to a nurse during this call if you have any questions about any aspect of your upcoming surgery or procedure.
Individuals with the following types of surgery/procedures should call different numbers:
- Eye or gynecological surgery/procedure. Please call 585-273-4361 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
- Kidney stone treatment (ESWL). Please call 585-275-3795 between 12:00 noon and 4 p.m.
- All other surgeries/procedures. Please call 585-275-8256 between 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Important Preparations Prior to Arriving for Your Surgery/Procedure

- Fill prescriptions for medications that you will need following surgery BEFORE your surgery date.
- Remember that children under 12 years of age are not permitted to accompany patients during surgery. Please arrange for child care if indicated.
- Have supplies you may need following surgery on hand at home BEFORE your surgery, including such items as:
- Tylenol/ibuprofen
- Band-aids
- Ice packs/heat packs
- Light foods, such as soup and crackers, Jell-O, sherbet, or popsicles
- Sanitary pads (if applicable)
Visitor Policy
Visiting hours vary by the service providing for your care. You may ask about visiting hours once you have been transferred to a patient care area following surgery/procedure. Please limit visitors to two (2) adults at any one time. Remember, children under 12 are not permitted as visitors.
Eating Guidelines
To ensure your comfort and reduce the risk of complications during your surgery/procedure we ask that you follow the eating instructions provided to you by your surgeon. If your physician has not given specific instructions, we ask that you follow the guidelines listed below beginning the night before your surgery/procedure:
- DO NOT eat solid food after midnight.
- Do not drink liquids within four (4) hours of your scheduled surgery time. If your surgery is scheduled before noon, you may drink only CLEAR LIQUIDS after midnight, including water, apple juice without pulp, clear carbonated beverages, black coffee or tea (no cream or milk).
- If you are pregnant, discontinue all liquids after midnight if you are pregnant, have gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying), experience reflux, or are significantly overweight.
- Stop smoking or reduce as much as possible for the 24 hours preceding your surgery/procedure.
Information About Medications for All Adult Surgical Patients
Please remember to take your regular medications on the morning of surgery, unless otherwise instructed by your physician. Take the medications at the usual time, or before leaving for the hospital, whichever comes first. Use no more than one ounce of water. Remember to follow all special instructions that you have received regarding:
- Blood thinners, such as Coumadin, Heparin or Lovenox
- Herbal supplements
- Medications for diabetes
- Aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
If you experience chronic pain, take your long-acting pain medication on the day of surgery. Please bring it with you to the Surgical Center, and inform your nurse if you need to take it while in the Center.
Special Instructions
- Call your doctor if you become ill before the day of your scheduled surgery/procedure.
- Remove all makeup, jewelry (including wedding bands and hair accessories), and nail polish before coming to the hospital.
- Wear loose and comfortable clothing.
- Leave baggage and crutches in your car if you are staying overnight in the hospital. Leave them in your car if you are returning home after your surgery/procedure.
- Please arrive on time.
- Please bring a responsible adult with you to your scheduled surgery/procedure. You must have an arranged escort and ride home following your scheduled surgery/procedure or we may be forced to cancel it.
- Remember that only two family members may join you in the Surgical Center once you have been prepared for surgery.
- Plan to have someone stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.

We ask that all visitors stop at the Information Desk in the Hospital’s Main Lobby to inquire about your room location and any visiting restrictions.
