What to Expect
The Pre-Admission Evaluation Center (PEC) is a medical clinic in Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH). During your visit to the Center you may:
- Be seen by a clinical practitioner and/or a member of the anesthesiology team
- Receive laboratory services, EKG, or chest x-ray
- Receive pre-op and post-op teaching

Your pre-admission appointment will last between 30 minutes and 3 hours, depending on the number of tests your physician orders for you. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your appointment:
- You may eat prior to your PRAT appointment.
- It is acceptable to bring a family member or friend with you.
- Parking is not validated for this visit.
- Our staff will answer any questions you have about the operative process and provide pre-procedure and post-operative instructions.

What to Bring
As you prepare to participate in your pre-procedure or pre-surgery visit, it is important for you to know what to bring to the visit site:
- A list of all current medications and dosages. Include in this list drugs you purchase at your local pharmacy and any dietary or herbal supplements you use. The list will be reviewed during your visit. We will answer your questions about medication management prior to surgery and indicate what medications you should or should not take on the day of surgery.
Your surgeon and/or nurse practitioner will provide guidelines for all medications. Of particular concern are:
- Blood thinners such as Coumadin, Heparin, or Lovenox
- Herbal supplements that may extend your bleeding time
- Medications for diabetes
- Aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or Naproxen (Aleve). Aspirin and non-steroidal medications are usually held for 7 days before the procedure unless otherwise directed by your surgeon. TYLENOL MAY BE TAKEN IF NEEDED.
- Completed Adult Medical History and Physical Form. This Form may be mailed to you from your surgeon’s office. If you do not receive a copy of the Form or do not have access to the website, we will provide you with a copy of it upon your arrival at the Center. You may complete it during the course of your visit .
- List of required tests (if provided by your doctor)
- Insurance card - Learn more about insurance and financial planning
- Co-payment (if required)
- Health care proxy,, living will, or power of attorney documents (if you have them)

Special Needs
If you require interpreter services due to limited proficiency in English or hearing impairment, let your surgeon or the Strong Surgical Center know in advance of your PRAT visit or day of scheduled surgery appointment. We will schedule an interpreter to be available at the time(s) of your scheduled visit(s).
