Getting Fitted for A Hearing Aid

An audiologist does the hearing aid evaluation, fitting, and follow-up work. You may need multiple visits, depending on your individual needs. Here’s what the process entails:

  • An audiologist tests your hearing and consults with you regarding the most appropriate hearing aid for your hearing loss and communication needs.
  • The device is custom fitted to your ear.
  • The device is set/programmed for your hearing loss.
  • You receive instruction in how to wear, adjust, and care for your hearing aid.

Adults generally return annually for a follow-up evaluation, which includes a hearing test, cleaning of the hearing aid, and a check to make sure it’s functioning properly.

Children are seen more frequently, typically every three to six months. If your hearing changes, many types of hearing aids can be adjusted accordingly. You should speak with your audiologist if you have any questions.
