Injury Free Coalition For Kids of Rochester

In Monroe County, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in infants, children, and teenagers. At the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, a program to better identify where and why these accidents occur, and prevent them, recently started. This program, The Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) is the first in upstate New York. It was made possible by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which currently funds 40 sites, and is among the country’s most effective injury-prevention programs.

No two sites are the same, because each program is tailored to a specific community. Locally, the program works with members of county and city government, law enforcement, school district, emergency medical services, the county health department, and neighborhood organizations. The initial goals of IFCK of Rochester are to learn more about how, when, and where these injuries occur, to set priorities for intervention, to develop new intervention strategies, and, ultimately, to study the impact of these interventions.

The three-year, $160,000 grant is supplemented by matching funds from the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Emergency Medicine and generous donations from various local foundations.
