Department of Hematology / Oncology (Adult Services)
At James P. Wilmot Cancer Center's Department of Hematology/Oncology, we care for and treat patients with cancers that affect blood-forming cells (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma) and solid tumors. Our Hematology / Oncology physicians are expert in choosing and administering drug therapies, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy (sometimes called biological response modifiers) or hormonal therapy, either alone or in combination with other treatments.
About Our Team Approach
While most cancer patients receive several types of treatment including radiation treatment, oncology treatment and surgery, no two patients are alike. That’s why the Cancer Center takes a team approach to create an individual care plan for each cancer patient. Our medical oncologists work closely with their surgical and radiation oncology counterparts to make sure that each patient receives the best care possible – care that is just right for their particular circumstance.
Because the medical oncologist has a broad knowledge of all aspects of cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, surgery, radiation therapy, and management of side effects, he or she plays a central role in this “shared care” approach to cancer. They provide advice to you and your medical team on treatment options, then carry the team approach forward into the meticulous planning and delivery of treatment with their own crew of therapists and specially trained registered nurses. They also collaborate with your primary care physician and other specialists, as appropriate.

Our Locations
Our program has active outpatient and inpatient services.

Because of today’s techniques for the management of side effects, more patients can stay at home while they receive treatment. Adult hematology / oncology outpatients are seen in the Ambulatory Pediatric Center on the third Floor of the Strong Memorial Hospital Ambulatory Care Center where transfusion, infusion chemotherapy and procedures can be performed without hospital admission. Outpatients may also be seen at the Highland Hospital Cancer Treatment Center.
- Adults needing inpatient care are treated on the 6th floor
(6-3400) of Strong Memorial Hospital and at
the Highland
Hospital Inpatient Oncology Unit (West 7). Each unit is staffed by highly trained physicians
and nurses
with specialized oncology experience.
- Adults requiring bone marrow transplant are cared for by the Pediatric and Adult Stem Cell Transplantation Center. This Unit is on the 8th floor of Strong Memorial Hospital (8-1200) and has 12 specially equipped isolation rooms and a staff of approximately 40 nurses. An Inpatient/Outpatient (IPOP) area on 8-1200 optimizes continuity of care by allowing both inpatients and outpatients to be treated on the same unit, by the same team. More information
