Who’s Who and What They Do
Cancer is a complex group of diseases, and comprehensive, quality treatment requires a multidisciplinary team of experts and specialists.
The Model in Action
On referral to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, a patient’s medical history is often provided to the oncologist for review before an initial, on-site visit. This gives the oncologist an opportunity to share the patient’s history and diagnosis with a multidisciplinary team of professionals who work together to determine the best treatment plan for a patient.
The multidisciplinary team is comprised of pathologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, fellows, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, dieticians, and research study managers. Together, they develop an individualized treatment plan that is discussed with the patient. This model is considered the most effective way to provide comprehensive treatment to cancer patients.
Working With Our Staff
The physicians and the nurses will encourage you to share all information regarding your cancer with them. It is a good idea to have a written list of symptoms and questions ready when you come in for an appointment. This will help you remember everything that might affect your treatment. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions. If something matters to you, it matters to us. The more you and your family understand about your condition, the better you and they can help.
