Glossary of Terms
- Atria - the two upper chambers of the heart
- Atrial Fibrillation -
a fast irregular rhythm in the atria
- Atrial Flutter - an abnormally fast but regular rhythm
in the atria; typical atrial flutter is located in the right atrium and atypical flutter may occur in either.
- AV Nodal Reentry Tachycardia - an extra
pathway near the AV node. The electrical impulse from the atria
goes to the AV node to the extra pathway and back up to the
atria, causing the atria to contract rapidly, speeding up the
heart rate.
- Ventricles - the two lower chamber of the
heart
- Ventricular Fibrillation - a fast unorganized
heart rhythm caused by abnormal electrical impulses or circuits
within the ventricles, which is fatal within several minutes unless terminated.
- Ventricular Tachycardia - a fast heart rhythm
caused by abnormal electrical impulses or circuit within the
ventricles
- Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) Syndrome - an
extra electrical pathway between the atria and ventricle
