Focus of the Program

Eat Right, Exercise, and Assume the Lotus Position

Typically, people participate in the program for several visits over a period of three to six months. They meet with John D. Bisognano, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiologist and an expert in hypertension, for an initial exam and prevention strategy. Patients also see a nurse practitioner, a nutritionist, and an exercise physiologist during the first visit.

"We want to get people back on track so they can live healthier lives and prevent heart disease. In most patients, a combination of aggressive lifestyle modification combined with medications can substantially improve cardiovascular outcomes. In the United States, only 27 percent of people with hypertension receive adequate treatment. Improvement of this rate is an important public health priority."
- John D. Bisognano, M.D., Ph.D.

After that, the program encourages people to take control of the risk factors that they can manage. With access to yoga, stress management techniques, counseling, weight-loss and nutrition counseling, and smoking cessation programs, people are provided with the tools they need to live healthier lives. Patients are also encouraged to enroll in Strong Health's Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Clinton Crossings.

Some patients will be treated with appropriate prescription medications specific to their blood pressure level and other diseases. In the future, newer blood pressure medications will also be available to suitable patients as part of research protocols.
