Medication Guidelines

Manage Your Own Medication

Maintain a

written record of the name and dose for all your medications to bring along to each clinic visit.

  • Learn both the generic and brand names of each medication.

  • Take all medications precisely as directed. Do not miss any doses and follow your prescribed schedule.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose or a double dose.

  • Store all your medications away from heat and direct light. Do not keep medicines in the bathroom cabinet since heat and moisture may cause a breakdown of the medicine. Do not store your medicine in the refrigerator unless directed to do so.

  • Keep medications in the original container with name, dosage and expiration date on the label.

  • Do not take other medications unless they have been prescribed by or discussed with the transplant team. This includes over-the-counter or non-prescription medications and supplements.

  • Maintain a written record of the name, dose, and administration times for all medications.

  • Plan ahead to prevent running out of medicine. You may get your prescriptions filled at the pharmacy of your choice. Please allow plenty of time for your refills to be processed.
