Sedation Procedures

The Pediatric Treatment Center staff, your child's doctors/nurse practitioners, and pediatric intensivists share a common goal to minimize the discomfort of children undergoing procedures. Sometimes sedation is required to achieve this goal.

If your child is to receive sedation for a procedure, please read and follow these instructions carefully:

  • Children under one year—No solid food or milk products, including formula for 4 hours before the procedure.
  • Children 1 to 3 years—No solid food or milk products for 6 hours before the procedure.
  • Children 3 years and older—No solid food or milk products for 8 hours before the procedure.
  • Your child should NOT drink 2 hours before the procedure.
  • Your child can drink clear liquids up until 2 hours before the procedure. Clear liquids are drinks you can see through (water, apple or cranberry juice, Sprite).
  • Children having a Bronchoscopy (all ages)—No solid food or milk products for 8 hours before the procedure and no clear liquids for 4 hours before the procedure.
  • Ask your child’s doctor if your child needs to take his or her medicine in the morning before the procedure. Many times your child can take it after the procedure.
  • If your child is wearing nail polish, it's important to remove it.
  • If your child is of driving age, he or she should NOT drive him/herself home. Another driver should accompany the child.
  • Your child should leave valuables at home.
  • Your child will remain in the Pediatric Treatment Center for at least one hour after his or her procedure.

A brief physical exam will need to be completed pre-procedure. This necessitates patients to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled procedure time. Promptness for the pre-op physical is essential for the procedure to be done.
