Pediatric Transport Program

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, a safe, efficient transport system keeps the services of Golisano Children's Hospital readily available to critically ill and injured children in the Finger Lakes Region of central western, New York, northern Pennsylvania and anywhere else its services are requested.

The Pediatric Transport Team has the specialized expertise and equipment to care for children as they are transported from a referring hospital to the Golisano Children's Hospital, by ambulance, helicopter, or fixed wing aircraft. The transport team initiates complex care on arrival at the referring hospital, further stabilizes the patient for safe transport and renders ongoing critical care until arrival at the Children's Hospital.

Each team includes a pediatric transport nurse, a pediatric transport respiratory therapist, a paramedic , and, as necessary. a pediatric critical care physician. All of the team members are thoroughly trained in the discipline of pediatric transport medicine. The team functions under the supervision of a pediatric critical care physician who provides the initial telephone consultation, helps determine the best make-up of the team and mode of transportation, and continues to be in contact with the team throughout the transport. For the most critically ill patients, a pediatric critical care physician also accompanies the patient. Referring physicians and hospitals who would like to know more about the Pediatric Transport Program at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, or would like to learn about pre-transport stabilization and treatment, are encouraged to call either the Pediatric Transport Medical Director or Transport Coordinator at 585-275-9707. Educational sessions can be arranged.
