Parent Advocate Program

Did You Know…

Our relationship with CURE has extended almost thirty years and as a result, thousands of children have benefited.

Golisano’s Children’s Hospital collaborates with the CURE Childhood Cancer Association to support the Parent Advocate Program, a valuable resource designed to offer support to parents of children newly diagnosed with cancer. The Program is funded and administered by CURE and thrives through the commitment of volunteer Parent Advocates. Each of our Parent Advocates is the mother of a long-term cancer survivor, and so are able to empathize and support families in a unique and personal way.

Parent Advocates work closely with doctors, nurses, and social workers to determine the non-medical needs of families and relay those needs to CURE. Needs may range from emotional support to financial assistance. Financial assistance may provide for incidental costs incurred during a stay at the hospital including parking fees, emergency meal money, uncovered medical expenses, emergency transportation and, if necessary, help with funeral expenses.

Our Parent Advocates are available to meet with families one-on-one to help them through this stressful time. In addition, the Parent Advocates host a coffee hour each Thursday afternoon at 1:00 pm at the hospital. This gathering provides parents with an opportunity to share their experiences and hard earned wisdom.

For more information visit the Childhood Cancer Association (CURE) web site.

Educational Liaison Program

The purpose of the Educational Liaison Program is to support our young patients as they continue with their education while undergoing treatment. Our Liaisons meet with school personnel, including teachers, school nurses and administrators, to help them understand the short-term and long-term effects that these diseases have on the learning abilities of children. Together, they coordinate tutoring; provide school reentry visits; and advocate for school services to help these children transition back into daily living. It’s a special day when our Liaisons are invited into a school to talk with classmates of children with cancer or blood disorders. Our Liaisons communicate with children to help them better understand the challenges that their young friends with cancer face. Our Liaisons also offer suggestions to classmates on how they can help with those challenges. It's a beautiful Program helping beautiful children.
