Pediatric Endocrinology
The Registered Dietician
The pediatric endocrinology registered dietician:
- Works with members of the pediatric endocrinology health care
team to provide medical nutrition therapy to Pediatric Endocrinology
patients with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, secondary diabetes,
those at risk for the development of diabetes and other Pediatric
Endocrinology patients requiring medical nutrition therapy.
- Determines nutritional needs and identifies nutrient requirements
for age and disease specific to Pediatric Endocrinology patients.
- Provides nutrition education to patients, family members,
and other care providers on appropriate food choices, carbohydrate
counting, meal planning and eating behaviors to meet patient
goals. Develops new education materials and/or evaluates commercially
available nutrition education materials that may be appropriate
for the Pediatric Endocrinology patient population.
- Fosters communication among all health care providers for patients.
May work with professionals from other Pediatric Divisions, Primary
Care Physicians, School Nurses and other school staff, Community
Health Nurses, Group Home Staff, and Care Providers as necessary
to ensure consistent education and care.
- Continuously evaluates the success of nutrition intervention.
- Participates in performance improvement and research activities.
This may include application for grant support from Project Believe
and other community-wide research projects.
- Participates in Community Outreach to provide education and
support to physicians, schools and other organizations that impact
the care of children and teens with diabetes.
