Respiratory Therapy

The respiratory therapists in Pediatric Pulmonology work closely with physicians, nurses, and families to provide both testing and education to inpatients and outpatients. They perform pulmonary function, exercise, and methylcholine challenge testing for a wide variety of patients in our clinic and for physician’s offices in the community. Respiratory therapists are involved in research projects and assist physicians with bronchoscopy procedures as well.

The respiratory therapist spends time with patients, families, and home care agencies providing instruction and support to patients with chronic and acute respiratory illness. Instruction may include at home therapy, including nebulized medications, airway clearance therapies, home ventilation, BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure), CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), cough assist devices, tracheostomy care, and home oxygen therapy.

Our therapists keep current with advances in technology to pass along to our patient population. We use the latest technology in body plethysmography and oscillometry.

Additional respiratory care services provided include:

  • Ventilator management of newborns, children, and adolescents
  • Administration of oxygen and aerosol therapy
  • Suctioning
  • Chest physiotherapy, airway clearance therapy
  • Pulse oximetry monitoring
  • End-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring
