The REACH Program

Referral and Evaluation of Abused Children

Referrals to REACH

Most often, your family doctor or health care provider would contact REACH, by calling (585) 935-7802.

REACH, located within the Bivona Child Advocacy Center, provides services and support to meet the needs of child victims of sexual or physical abuse and their families. We are committed to reducing trauma, fostering healing, and promoting advocacy on behalf of children in need.

REACH is an evaluation service and does not provide ongoing counseling services. We do, however, share a list of trusted counselors and therapists if the family is looking for additional support.

Evaluation Services

A typical REACH evaluation includes a psychosocial assessment and a medical evaluation.

  • Psychosocial Assessment
During the psychosocial assessment, a social worker meets with the family to gather information, discuss the child's history and address the family's concerns. The social worker may also speak with the child alone in a supportive, private way. It is helpful for family members to encourage the child to speak openly to the social worker, but NOT to coach the child about what to say. Afterwards, the social worker meets with the family, doctor, nurse practitioner and/or other professional who may be present at the appointment.

  • Medical Evaluation
During the medical evaluation, a member of the REACH medical team will take a medical history and perform a physical examination of the child. A colposcope (a special "microscope") may be used and if needed, photographs may be taken. No part of the examination is painful. Usually a parent or guardian remains in the room with the child. After the examination, the medical provider will meet with the family to explain the results of the medical examination and answers questions the family may have.

Following an evaluation, a report is prepared and sent to the professionals involved in the case. This may include people from the legal community. Members of the REACH team will also testify in court when necessary.

Most health insurance covers the cost of evaluation. This may require a referral from your child's doctor or health care provider. A co-pay may apply.
