The History of Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong

The 1930s and 1940s

During the 1930s and 40s, the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics began to grow to meet the ever-rising demand for care of Rochester's children. Dr. Clausen appointed five house staff: Dr. Bradford as Chief Resident, as well as two assistant residents and two interns. Because of the small number of full-time staff, it became necessary to incorporate the part-time assistance of area pediatricians, thus forging the critical relationship and interdependence of community pediatrician and hospital.

1945

An affiliation was formed between the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Genesee Hospital. Genesee's Chief of Pediatrics, Jerome Glaser, M.D., developed an Allergy Center, which became a national example of practice-based research. This model was widely copied, and Rochester is "now considered the nation's premier city for research generated by community physicians working in concert with an academic center."

The nation's second Poison Information Center, sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics, was established in Rochester.
