The History of Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong

The 1990s

The goals of the original Department of Pediatrics - community care and rigorous research - continued to be met with excellence. The growth that began in the 1980s continued, and the services and functions of the Department of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital expanded exponentially.

1993

Dr. Elizabeth R. McAnarney (Syracuse) became the sixth Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Prior to her appointment, she directed the Department's Division of Adolescent Medicine for twenty years and established patient care and research programs directed to adolescent pregnancies and their outcomes.

1994

The state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opened. With a capacity of 52 cribs, the NICU sees as many as 1100 admissions per year from Rochester and the 12-county Finger Lakes region.

1996

The Children's and Adolescent Ambulatory Health Care Center opened as part of Strong Memorial Hospital's $83 million Ambulatory Care Facility. This effort included moving the Children's Heart Center at Strong from an off-campus location to on-site within the Ambulatory Care Facility.

The Pediatric Service at Strong Memorial Hospital became Strong Children's Hospital - a children's hospital within a hospital and Rochester's premier hospital for the care of children.

1998

The Department of Pediatrics was ranked 13th among the nation's pediatric departments receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health.
