Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong

"We strive to provide a superb educational experience that builds knowledge and develops values."

Education for the Next Generation, With a Goal to Offer the Best Pediatric Residency in New York State

Preparing tomorrow's health care leaders is a fundamental responsibility at Golisano Children's Hospital, a responsibility that has been fulfilled for more than 75 years. The quality of education for physicians at Golisano Children's Hospital was recognized in 2003, when U.S. News & World Report listed Strong's Department of Pediatrics as one of the top pediatric programs in the United States.

At Golisano Children's Hospital, pediatric residents and fellows have the opportunity to learn from the best in a rigorous program designed to provide a wealth of pediatric experiences and the intellectual depth and stimulation that are building blocks for any pediatric career.

Dr. Karen Powers, associate director of the Pediatrics Residency Program, calls the program "a superb educational experience that builds knowledge and develops values that are central to being a physician." Among the values cited by Dr. Powers are: responsibility, thoroughness, availability, and sensitivity to the needs of children and their families; a scientifically cultivated and inquiring mind; the capacity to handle uncertainty; critical (and accurate) self-appraisal; and continual self-growth. The environment within Golisano Children's Hospital also fosters skills specific to physicians caring for children: the true enjoyment of working with infants, children, adolescents, and young adults; the development of communication skills with children and their families; an appreciation of the development of children; knowledge of childhood diseases and the pathophysiologic basis for those diseases; and an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention.

Fellowships

Fellowships of two to three years' duration for post-residency training in clinical and / or research activities are available in 19 areas. Nearly 50% of the graduates of these programs remain in the region, ensuring high quality children's health services for the next generation.
