National Involvement
Our national involvement strengthens our clinical and research position by keeping us abreast of rising issues in the study, education, and treatment of cystic fibrosis. Our faculty and nurses have served in an advisory capacity to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in several areas, including Quality Improvement, the Patient and Family Education Committee, and the Program Planning for the North American CF Conference. Through the Epidemiological Study of CF, we have participated in data analysis and the publication of results addressing questions to improve the quality of specific care initiatives in cystic fibrosis, keeping us on the forefront for new therapies. We are also active participants in the North American CF Conference, an annual professional conference of clinical and basic science research professionals sponsored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Community Outreach and Professional Development
We are fortunate to have the Kit Taylor Memorial Lectureship at the Golisano Children's Hospital, established in 1982. The annual two-day event continues to draw enthusiasm from parents, trainees, nurses, physicians and community medical professionals. It is an opportunity for parents and medical professionals to learn from renown national experts in CF. An evening is set aside strictly for parents, patients, and interested community members. Guest speakers have presented such topics as latest improvements in care, newborn screening, new therapies, genetics, and lung transplants.
For more information on this event, contact the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology at 585-275-2464.
Research
The members of our CF team are actively involved in research that evaluates better treatments for CF. We are collaborative investigators on two national epidemiologic databases sponsored by the CFF and Genentech (ESCF). Data is collected and analyzed to better understand the natural history, progression, and results of treatment for CF. We also participate in multi-center clinical trials for new therapies and work with Dr. Barbara Iglewski from the Department of Microbiology, who has earned national recognition for her studies involving the characteristics of the Pseudomonas bacteria, commonly associated with CF.
