Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Stages

There is no staging for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Treatment is determined by age of the child, the results of laboratory tests, and whether or not the patient has been previously treated for leukemia. Instead of staging, ALL is described in the following terms:

Untreated No treatment has been given except to reduce symptoms. No treatment is typically given when too many white blood cells are present in the blood and bone marrow or if there are other signs and symptoms of leukemia.

In Remission Treatment has been given and amount of white blood cells in the blood and bone marrow are normal, and no signs or symptoms of leukemia are present.

Recurrent Leukemia has returned following treatment and period of remission.

Refractory Leukemia fails to go into remission following treatment.
