Services and Programs
Infants' and Young Children's Unit
Infants and young children have a 17-bed unit devoted specifically to their needs. On this unit, parents and children are our priority. We are here to help you and your child through your child’s hospitalization. We welcome your comments and suggestions on how to assist you in helping your child. We encourage you to share information about your child with staff. Parents are not considered visitors and are welcome any time.
Your Professional Health Care Team
- Doctors. You may have several doctors involved
in your child's care, depending on the reason for admission.
Your child's Attending Physician may be your personal pediatrician
or a specialty physician (for example: surgeon, cardiologist,
oncologist). This physician supervises your child's care and
plans for treatment.
- Primary Nurses. Your child will be assigned
a Primary Nurse, the main nurse who will be responsible for
planning your child's nursing care. The nurse will oversee
the care given by other nurses and coordinate your child's
care, including discharge planning.
- Patient Care Technicians. The Patient Care
Technicians assist the nurses and doctors with your child's
daily care. They may check your child's temperature, blood
pressure and pulse, perform blood draws, help with baths and
perform a variety of other services.
- Discharge Coordinators. Discharge Coordinators
are nurses who work closely with your health care team to address
your child's home care needs. They arrange for nursing visits
in the home and order equipment and supplies when necessary.
- Child Life Specialists. Child
Life Specialists have advanced education in childhood development. They provide
therapeutic play activities that focus on your child's emotional
and developmental needs. They also supervise and coordinate
volunteers.
- Social Workers. Social Workers are available
to help with any special concerns that you may have during
your child's hospital stay. They work closely with the medical
and nursing staff in discharge planning and assist with referrals
to needed community services.
- Nutritionists. Pediatric Nutritionists
have advanced training in nutritional needs of children. They
work closely with your health care team to monitor and address
your child's individual needs. They assist with special diet
concerns and are available for nutrition counseling, discharge
planning and referral to community nutrition services.
- Chaplaincy Service. Chaplaincy services are available daily to
offer support to your family during your child's stay. If you
feel this support would be helpful, please let your Primary
Nurse know.
- Volunteers. Our volunteers are specially
trained to work with children, to provide play for your child
or feed him or her while you take a break.
Meals and Menu Planning
Upon admission, please inform your child's nurse of any special diet concerns or food allergies your child may have. Meal delivery approximate times are:

Cafeteria on the first floor. The House
of Six Nations Cafeteria is open seven days a week.
