Neonatal Transport Program

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, a safe, efficient transport system keeps the services of Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) readily available to critically ill and premature newborns in upstate New York and our 14-county referral region.

The Neonatal Transport Team has the specialized expertise and equipment to care for newborns as they are transported to the hospital by ambulance. Complex care is initiated by the transport team on arrival at the referring hospital and continued throughout the transport.

Each team includes a neonatal transport nurse, transport respiratory therapist and a paramedic/emergency medical technician. All of the team members complete an in-depth course of classroom study and competency-based skills training. The team functions with the supervision of a neonatologist who provides either telephone consultation and advice, or in-person management throughout the transport.

Team members take all of the necessary equipment with them, including a specially equipped incubator that serves as a traveling NICU, and special medications not usually found at some hospitals.
