Keeping Kids Safe

Winter Safety Tips

Winter in Rochester provides many opportunities to enjoy outdoor winter sports such as skating, sledding, hockey and skiing. Before heading out, make sure your children are warm and protected against the elements. Following are a few tips to keep everyone in the snow:

  • Clothing. Dress in layers in order to stay warm and dry. Also -wear bright colors to be easily seen.
  • Head gear. When participating in a sport, wear the proper helmet. At other times, be sure to wear a hat, scarf, and gloves, and keep the ears covered.
  • Snow mobiles. Use only under adult supervision.
  • Weather. Pay attention to weather reports and avoid outdoor activities during severe wind chills and extremely low temperatures. Infants and toddlers should not go outside when the wind chill dips to 10 degrees or below.
  • Ice. Never step onto ice, ponds or lakes, without an adult checking the ice first.
  • Risks. Know the symptoms of hypothermia and frost bite.
  • Children. Make sure children know to never touch metal during cold temperatures, and to never eat snow.
  • Sports. Be sure to wear the appropriate gear and know the rules of your sport.
