Dr. William Phipps has treated patients with reproductive hormonal problems since 1984, when he first began performing in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures.
He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1976 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his medical degree in 1980 from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He then completed both his obstetrics/gynecology residency and reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the Harvard Medical School (Brigham and Women’s Hospital) before assuming a faculty position at the University of Minnesota.
At Minnesota, he made national headlines when his patient, Arlette Schweitzer, became the first woman in the country to successfully serve as a gestational carrier surrogate for her daughter, Christa Uchytil. A movie about the story first aired on television on Mother’s Day, 1993.
Dr. Phipps puts his patients first, paying close attention to details that may impact outcomes. He particularly believes that it is important for a patient and her partner to have a good understanding of their case, to optimize their decision-making.
Dr. Phipps is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He has authored or co-authored over 50 medical articles and book chapters. He is a member of several professional societies and has served as a reviewer for many medical journals.
