Major Clinical and Investigative Interests

This fellowship is ACGME accredited for subspecialty training in cerebrovascular disease, and successful completion of this fellowship will qualify candidates as board-eligible for certification in cerebrovascular neurology. The program offers first-hand experience in 1) the clinical management of stroke patients; 2) the conduct of clinical research in patients with cerebrovascular disease; 3) on-going trials in stroke treatment and prevention; and 4) development of acute stroke treatment protocols. An active, clinical stroke service provides the fellow with wide exposure to various cerebrovascular disorders. The fellowship also provides ample opportunity for pursuit of individual interests or projects. Current research projects include novel neuroprotectants and acute endovascular interventions, the development of quality-of-care indicators, the novel use of ultrasonography in acute stroke and neurovascular monitoring, stroke prevention in patients with insulin resistance or lacunar disease, PTO closure for cryptogneic stroke. Additional training in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics is also available.

For selected applicants who successfully complete the initial year, the Fellowship in Cerebrovascular Disease may be combined with the NIH-funded Fellowship in Experimental Therapeutics under the direction of Drs. Griggs, Shoulson, and Oakes.
