Research and Clinical Trials

A Multicenter Study of the Outcomes of Epilepsy Surgery (MSES)

This study has been designed to follow prospectively approximately 400 patients who undergo surgery for treatment of medically intractable seizures. The study has two primary goals: (1) To determine what factors will predict a seizure-free outcome following surgery. (2) To determine what changes in quality of life and productive activity occur as a consequence of successful epilepsy surgery.

The Strong Epilepsy Center is participating in this study along with five other epilepsy centers at the following institutions:

  • Yale University (Yale-New Haven Hospital), New Haven CT
  • Columbia University (Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital), New York, NY
  • New York University (Hospital for Joint Diseases), New York, NY
  • Albert Einstein University (Montifiore Hospital), New York, NY
  • Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA

The study is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health and started in 1996. It initially ran for period of 5 years and has been renewed for an additional 5 years.
