Treatments - When Seizures Are Not Epilepsy
Some seizures are caused by unconscious, emotional processes
rather than a neurological problem in the brain. We recognize
these seizures to be just as real and just as devastating as
those caused by epilepsy.
Patients who struggle with seizures that have their roots in
emotional processes are a particular specialty of the Strong
Epilepsy Center.
Working with the patient and family, we try to understand the
nature and possible causes of such seizures. Then, we work together
to devise a treatment plan that targets the underlying causes
of the symptoms. Our social worker helps locate psychosocial
services in the patient's community for ongoing treatment.
With proper assessment and a carefully formulated treatment
plan, patients can return to their family and community with
the confidence that these seizures will significantly diminish.
Often they are eliminated entirely.
