Stroke and Cerebrovascular Unit
Research activities of the Stroke Unit represent a broad spectrum of interests, including multi-center clinical trials, health services research, pilot projects in biomarkers, cost-effectiveness, applications of new technology, and basic mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic injury. Members of the Stroke Unit have served as site investigators for a multitude of clinical trials for acute stroke treatment and stroke prevention, including both NIH-funded and industry-sponsored research.
Dr. Benesch is currently co-investigator on two local projects under review by the NIH involving prevention of stroke in patients with sickle cell disease and treatment of acute ischemic stroke.
Dr. Burgin has developed a research application of technology assessment for biomarkers in stroke, including novel applications of transcranial ultrasonography. He has also collaborated with our local Vascular Surgery group in developing an industry-sponsored trial of an agent to reduce emboli during carotid endarterectomy.
Dr. Holloway is a national leader in health services research. He has served as principal investigator for a study to develop quality indicators for stroke care. He has also received a K-24 Award from the NIH, serving as a mentor for numerous students in their thesis requirement in the Masters of Public Health program and for several fellows in the Experimental Therapeutics program.
Dr. Rempe recently received a K-08 award for is work in basic mechanisms of neuronal ischemic injury.
Molly Hildreth and Justine Zentner serve as clinical coordinators on the clinical trials conducted by the Stroke Unit.
