Flaum Eye Institute
Research Team
Dr. Aquavella has organized a team of scientists to investigate human tear film dynamics and a link to dry eye syndromes.
The group includes Shizuka Koh, Geunyoung Yoon, and James Zavislan. They employ wave front sensors to monitor the regularity of the tear film and its effects on vision. Ellipsometry is a new optical technique that is being employed to determine the refractive index of the tear lipid layer. Dr Yoon has developed a new high resolution optical coherence tonographer the team is using to investigate variations in tear film with blink. The purpose of these studies are to create an innovative, rapid and comprehensive measurement of the quality and quantity of tears over the ocular surface and their variation with blinking.
Utilizing a newly designed controlled adverse environment in conjunction with the objective monitoring techniques a variety of studies are in progress with the expectation of contributing to our understanding of the dry eye.
