Pediatric Inpatient Consultation

Palliative care staff with a pediatric patient

The pediatric palliative care team serves children who are hospitalized or who receive outpatient treatment at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. Like the adult program, pediatric palliative care can be provided alongside the active treatment of a patient’s underlying illness.

In a recently established division of the Strong Health Palliative Care Program, the pediatric team focuses on issues that are unique to infants, children, and adolescents.

Goals of Pediatric Inpatient Consultation

  • Help with pain and severe discomfort requiring symptom management

  • Provide guidance to the pediatrician and family in relieving physical, emotional, social, and spiritual pain in the child and adolescent with a life-threatening illness

  • Help the pediatric staff, child, and family with the transition to end-of-life care.

  • Support families who are grieving

The pediatric team includes a rotating group of pediatricians, pediatric nurse practitioners, and pediatric social workers who work closely with members of the Strong Health Palliative Care Program team of chaplains, psychiatrists, ethicists, and other palliative care physicians and nurse practitioners.
