The Infectious Diseases Residency at the University of Rochester is a 12-month, full-time curriculum. The primary goal of the program is to guide the resident, who possesses in-depth knowledge and skills in clinical pharmacy practice, with a specialty in both clinical laboratory medicine and infectious diseases. This intensive training involves activities in a wide variety of practice settings, including:

  • Rounding with the adult and pediatric Infectious Diseases Consult Services

  • Rounding with the HIV Consult Service. Since persons infected with HIV are managed in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, the resident will also have the opportunity to provide pharmaceutical care/medication counseling to patients in the Infectious Diseases Ambulatory Clinic.

  • Providing consults through the clinical pharmacokinetics service

  • Managing the antimicrobial formulary and restricted antibiotics through the Antimicrobial Management Program

  • Learning about the diagnostic procedures in clinical microbiology/serology through the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

  • Teaching numerous patient populations at the University of Rochester, as well as surrounding universities

Accreditation

The Infectious Diseases Residency is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Its goals, objectives, and evaluation procedures are consistent with the goals and objectives of infectious diseases residency training established by ASHP.

Although the general schedule of the Infectious Diseases Residency year is outlined below, the rotations may vary to meet the needs and interests of the individual resident.

Residents will also have opportunities to develop teaching skills by providing in-service presentations for pharmacy staff and didactic lectures to students in other health care professions, such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Development of a major project related to a specific aspect of infectious diseases is required, and the results are to be presented at the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors. A minor project is also to be prepared and presented at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.

The estimated one-year stipend is $39,500. Additional benefits include health insurance, sick leave, paid holidays, book allowance and travel reimbursement for 2-3 professional meetings.

Requirements For Admission

Admission to the specialty residency program is available to Pharm.D. graduates who have completed a pharmacy practice residency or the equivalent. Residents must be a United States citizen or carry a permanent resident visa. Residents must be eligible for New York State licensure.

An application form is not required, but the following items must be submitted:
  1. Letter of intent stating goals and interests
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. Three letters of references, using the ASHP reference writing form
  4. Official college transcripts
