Helping You Reach Your Rehabilitation Goals, One Day at a Time

We are very aware that this may be a time of confusion, anxiety, change, and hope for you and your family. Our primary goal is to work with you and your family to alleviate these fears and anxieties and make your rehabilitation process a positive experience.

Early into your stay on the Rehabilitation Unit, the team will evaluate you and provide an estimate of how long it will take you to reach your rehabilitation goals.

Determining Length of Stay and a Discharge Date

A tentative discharge date will be shared with you and your family members or care provider. If it appears that you will meet your goals before this discharge date, an earlier discharge date will be arranged.

If the team feels that you would benefit from a longer stay, they will review this recommendation with you and your insurance carrier. If all agree, a new date may be considered.

Average Length of Stay

  • Spinal Cord Injuries
    • Quadriplegia: 2-6 weeks
    • Paraplegia: 2-4 weeks
  • Stroke
    • 2-4 weeks
  • Amputation
    • Above the knee: 2-3 weeks after receiving prosthesis, 1-2 weeks without prosthesis
    • Below the knee: 1-2 weeks after receiving prosthesis
  • Multiple Trauma
    • 1-3 weeks
  • Orthopaedic
    • Less than 1-2 weeks

Going Home

Remember that your discharge date will be established around your needs and goals and it may or may not be within the average lengths of stay listed above.

Discharge time is at 1:00 p.m. On your day of discharge, you are invited to participate in your morning therapies. If you have any special needs, please alert your rehabilitation physician and we will assist you.

Follow-Up Care

After completion of your inpatient stay on the Rehabilitation Unit, you can expect to continue your therapy in one of the following settings: your own home, in an outpatient setting, or in a skilled nursing facility, many of which have excellent short- and long-term rehabilitation programs that serve both older and younger adults.
