Recreation Therapist

A recreation therapist (RT) provides structured, recreational activities in a group or on an individual basis, providing the patient with an opportunity to practice new skills. The RT helps the patient develop strengths and abilities, rather than focus on limitations.

During an assessment, patients share hobbies, leisure interests, and the reasons why they enjoy these activities with the RT. Since recreation therapy is designed around activities that the patient enjoys, we assist in identifying barriers to leisure enjoyment and help develop new ways to approach favorite activities.

Leisure education sessions are designed to inspire new ways of thinking about leisure. The patient may make an easier transition to home if part of the therapy occurs in the community. Community re-entry activities are an ideal way to practice what has been learned in a real world setting. Information about transportation and community resources are shared.

Patients and their families may participate together in general recreation groups. In fact, they are encouraged to do so. General recreation promotes health and independence through self-rewarding leisure pursuits. A calendar of events is posted on the Strong Rehabilitation Unit. RT will provide orientation to leisure resources.

Special recreation therapy programs include:

  • Community re-entry activities such as outings to the mall, museums, movies, etc.
  • Meal programs
  • Pet therapy
