Speech Pathologist
The speech pathologist provides services for patients who experience speech, language, cognition or swallowing problems resulting from stroke, head injury or neuromuscular disease. The program emphasizes skills needed for family communication, social interaction and employment.
Specific areas addressed by the speech pathologist:
Speech/Language
- Assessment and treatment of aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia and voice disorders
- Intervention for reading and writing disorders
- Provision of augmentative communication devices if needed
Swallowing
- Assessment and treatment of chewing and swallowing problems
- Recommendations for diet modification and compensatory strategies to optimize
Cognition
- Assessment and treatment of cognitive skills including memory, thought organization, reasoning and problem solving
The speech pathologist can also arrange hearing assessment and evaluation for hearing amplification through the Audiology & Speech Pathology Department.
