Pulsifer Medical Associates

History of Dr. Libby Pulsifer

The Pulsifer Medical Practice was founded by Dr. Libby Pulsifer in 1926.  Dr. Pulsifer was a fourth generation physician from Maine.  The first physician in the family line was Dr. Moses Rust Pulsifer (1799-1877).  Dr. Libby Pulsifer settled in Rochester after training for his medical degree at the Rush Medical School of the University of Chicago.  He had additional training in gastroenterology and was the chairman of the board of governors of the American College of Gastroenterolgy.

Dr. Pulsifer was well known for his common sense and his firm, yet fatherly, style.  He effectively and affectionately cared for many of Rochester's community leaders for over 5 decades until his retirement in 1980.  For this he became well known in the Rochester community and many young physicians sought to train under his guidance.  During World War II, Dr. Pulsifer served as a major in the Army with a base hospital in Europe.  Upon his return to Rochester, he reestablished his practice.

Over the following decades, over a dozen well known Rocohester doctors started their careers working at Dr. Pulsifer's side.  As practice styles changed, Dr. Conrad Good partnered with Dr. Pulsifer, and was subsequently joined by Dr. James Stormont, Dr. Lawrence Chessin, and Dr. Gregory Riley.  In 1979, the group incorporated and took on the official name of Pulsifer Medical Associates in honor of Dr. Pulsifer.  By that time, Dr. Pulsifer had established a wonderful and enduring reputation.  He held numerous honors, inlcuding the Albert David Kaiser Medal of the Rochester Academy of Medicine.  Most importantly, Dr. Pulsifer created a legacy of dedicated patient care that has been emulated by all who were fortunate enough to have practiced with him in the Pulsifer Group.  A commitment to compassionate patient care was the focus of his professional energies and his mission statement.
