Aging Successfully

Assessments are Key to Well Being

A medical assessment is a little like having an accountant help you do your income taxes. Assessments take a look at the "bottom line" in your health. Their goal is to evaluate your current health, diagnose any problems, plan for any treatments needed, and schedule a follow-up visit. Some questions that might be asked at an initial assessment include:

  • How are you feeling?
  • What illness or surgeries have you had?
  • How's your life going on a daily basis?
  • Do you need help?

Important Outside Factors

Your health and sense of well-being can be affected not only by physical factors, but also by many powerful outside influences. These include: recent deaths of loved ones, the availability of help from family and friends, money matters, problems thinking clearly, mood swings, and feelings of isolation or depression.

Who Performs Medical Assessments?

At Strong Health, where seniors are a priority, a team of professionals trained in many different geriatric specialties performs assessments. We call this the “multidisciplinary” approach. Team members can include:

  • Geriatricians - experts trained in senior health care issues
  • Geriatric nurse practitioners
  • Social workers for care planning
  • Behavioral neurologists
  • Geropsychiatrists - specialists in mental health
  • Physical and occupational therapists for rehabilitation to get you moving again
  • Urologists
  • Orthopedic surgeons for bone problems

A few of the medical procedures used for a senior’s assessment include:

  • Blood work
  • CAT scans
  • "Mini" mental status

What's the Payoff?

Geriatric assessments can:

  • Improve health
  • Lengthen life
  • Reduce need for acute nursing care
  • Keep seniors out of the Emergency Room (ER)
