Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization

Transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMLR) uses a computer laser to treat severe angina (chest pain) and coronary artery disease. TMLR provides hope for patients not able to undergo bypass surgery, angioplasty or whose angina (pain) is not relieved by medications or other treatments.

Here’s How TMLR Works

During TMLR surgery, a computer sends laser beams through the muscle wall surrounding the left ventricle (heart chamber) between heartbeats. The laser beams make openings that allow blood (and the oxygen in the blood) flow into the heart muscle wall, thereby reducing chest pain. The laser makes “roads” within the heart muscle to let oxygen-rich blood pass through.
