Conditions We Treat
Anal Fistulas
What are Anal Fistulas?
Anal fistulas are abnormal openings between the anal canal and the outer skin surrounding the anus. On the skin’s surface, fistula ends may appear as holes that tunnel down into the anal canal.
Causes of Anal Fistulas
They are usually the result of an abscess—a collection of pus and mucus in a gland near the anus—which does not heal properly. Fistulas are also associated with conditions that irritate the intestines, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Symptoms of Anal Fistulas
Symptoms include:
- Dull, throbbing pain
- Itchiness
- Discomfort in and around the anus
Treatment for Anal Fistulas
Fistulas are rarely serious but they usually do not heal by themselves. Surgery is often recommended.
