Fissures
What are Fissures?
Fissures are small cuts or tears in the moist lining tissue (mucous membrane) of the anus. They are typically caused by some form of trauma to the membrane, such as the passing of large, hard stools, constipation or prolonged diarrhea. Common in infants, fissures are experienced by some women after childbirth and some people with Crohn’s disease. Decreased blood flow to the anus in older people can also be a factor in their development.
Symptoms of Fissures
Symptoms can include:
- Painful bowel movements
- Constipation
- Blood on surface of the stool
Treatment for Fissures
Treatment often begins with the use of over-the-counter ointments and stool softeners, dietary changes to include more fiber, and sitz baths. Persistent fissures may require minor surgery to relax the anal sphincter muscle.
