Ogilvie's Syndrome
What is Ogilvie’s Syndrome?
With Ogilvie’s syndrome, the symptoms of intestinal blockage are present, but an actual obstruction is not. A frustrating condition that is difficult to diagnose, Ogilvie’s syndrome typically occurs in people already hospitalized with serious illnesses.
Symptoms of Ogilvie's Syndrome
Its hallmark is severe distension of the abdomen due to swelling of the colon with air and fluid. Rapid heartbeat and sweating may also occur.
Causes of Ogilvie's Syndrome
Ogilvie’s syndrome is generally the result of nerve damage caused by acute conditions such as stroke, heart attack, peritonitis, or sepsis.
Treatment for Ogilvie's Syndrome
Treatment includes medication, insertion of a tube to facilitate the passage of gas and, in progressive cases, surgery.
