Sinus Surgery
Most often, ENT specialists prescribe medications
(antibiotics, decongestants, nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines)
to treat acute sinusitis/sinus infections. However,
there are times when sinus infections are recurrent and/or unresponsive
to medical treatment - sinus surgery is recommended
for these patients. People born with
small sinuses and narrow nasal passages may also benefit from sinus
surgery.
Our physicians are board certified specialists and are experts
in the treatment of chronic sinus conditions. Before performing
any sinus surgery, our ENT physicians order a CAT scan (if you
haven't had one previously) to confirm the diagnosis and to examine
the sinuses.
The goal of sinus surgery is to improve the natural
drainage of the sinuses. Some of the leading
treatment options offered at Strong Health include:
- Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: Endoscopic sinus
surgery involves inserting a very thin fiber-optic
tube (endoscope) into the nose to examine the openings of the
sinuses. The physician uses the instrument to remove abnormal
and obstructive
tissues from the sinus passageways. Usually, the procedure
is performed
through
the
nostrils, leaving no external scars. Other benefits of endoscopic
surgery include, less normal sinus tissue removal, outpatient
procedure, and little swelling and
only mild discomfort after the surgery.
- Image Guided Surgery: Image
guided surgery is a three-dimensional mapping system.
It combines CAT scans and infrared
signals to help surgeons navigate surgical instruments
through
the
sinus
passages
and precisely remove abnormal and obstructive tissue. Image guided
surgery is based on the same technology used by the United
States
Armed
Forces
to
guide bombs
to their
target.
