Breast Lumpectomy
Breast lumpectomy is the surgical procedure to remove a lump in the breast. A breast lump may be a solid mass or a fluid-filled cyst. The lumpectomy operation is done, when it is possible, to treat breast cancer without removing the whole breast.
For a lumpectomy, general or local anesthesia is used, then an incision is made and the lump is removed, along with a small surrounding edge of normal breast tissue. The lump will then be sent to a laboratory for examination.
Only a small portion of all breast lumps are malignant, but the risk does increase with age.
