Fluid Injection

This procedure involves injecting a medicated fluid into the fat before it is suctioned out. The solution contains a local anesthetic and a drug that contracts blood vessels. Anesthesia makes it easier to remove the fat, and reduces blood loss and bruising.

Types of Fluid Injection

There are at least two varieties of the fluid injection techniques:

  • Tumescent Technique: involves injecting very large amounts of fluid, as much as three times the amount of fat to be removed. The fluid usually contains enough anesthesia so that none other is needed, but the procedure takes longer (up to four or five hours) than traditional liposuction

  • Super-wet Technique: uses less fluid (usually equal to the amount of fat to be removed) and takes less time (about one or two hours), but usually requires additional anesthesia.
