Carotid Endarterectomy
If your carotid arteries are drastically blocked, we’ll recommend carotid endarterectomy. Using this procedure, we remove plaque that has built up on the inside wall of your artery. Removing the plaque allows normal blood flow through the previously blocked area.
Carotid endearterectomy has an excellent track record. We’re able to perform the surgery through a tiny (much smaller than with tradition surgery) incision because the plaque and obstruction is concentrated in such a small area in your neck. You might even be able to go home the following morning. Most patients enjoy a quick recovery and are able to return to normal activities.
Risks of Carotid Endarterectomy
All surgery has risks. The primary risk of carotid endarterectomy is stroke. This is because the patient is already at a high risk for stroke because of the plaque in the artery. And a stroke could occur during the procedure itself. Still, results show the benefits of carotid endarterectomy outweigh the risks—especially because the risk of stroke is already present and greater for patients who do not have the procedure.
