Menstrual Dysfunction Disorders

When it comes to "that time of the month" is hard to make generalizations about how much pain you may feel, how long your period will last, or how regular it may be. It's just another way in which every woman is unique.

The Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual period begins with the first day of bleeding of one period and ends with the first day of the next period. An average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days.

During the menstrual cycle, the hormones estrogen and progesterone create a change in the lining of the uterus. On approximately the 14th day of this cycle ovulation occurs (eggs are released from the ovaries). The egg(s) move into the fallopian tube where it can be fertilized by a sperm. If the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining and extra blood is shed through the canal. This expulsion of blood and tissue is commonly called a period.

Many women have problems with their periods–both physically and emotionally–including cramps, dull aches, fatigue, or mood swings or many other symptoms.
