Stereotactic Surgery
This technique involves surgery guided by CT scanning. It is most appropriate for “deep” surgeries in which the diseased area can’t be easily reached. A surgeon, viewing three-dimensional images, is able to deliver a single, high dose of radiation to the exact diseased location. This precise dose does not injure the areas closest to the diseased area—a tumor, for example.
Stereotactic surgery is most often associated with advanced Parkinson’s disease, situations when medication is no longer helpful, and deep tumors of the brain and other areas. It is used for colorectal conditions in selected cases.
