Benign Prostatic Hyperplasis (BPH)

Causes and Risk Factors

Although the prostate can become enlarged for various reasons, the major cause of BPH is aging. The prostate often begins to enlarge after 40 and more than half of men over 60, and perhaps 80% or more of men over 80, have BPH. There is also evidence that BPH is more common among American and European men than Asian men, and among men with a family history of prostate enlargement.
