Incontinence–Treatment Options
Devices
There are a number of medical devices to treat incontinence that
are designed specifically for women. They include:
-
Pessary
Stress incontinence is often caused
by weak pelvic muscles (the muscles that hold the bladder in
place and keep urine inside). A pessary is a stiff ring inserted
into the vagina, where it presses against the vaginal wall and
nearby urethra. The pressure helps reposition the urethra, leading
to less stress leakage. If you use a pessary, watch for possible
vaginal and urinary tract infections and see your doctor regularly.
-
Urethral Inserts
These small, disposable devices
(about one-fifth the size of tampon) are inserted into the urethra
to stop urine leakage during specific activities. They have a
balloon tip which fills with air, blocking the flow of urine.
When they are removed, you can urinate normally. You should use
these only for specific activities, such as running, that you
know cause you to leak urine or lose urinary control.
