While undergoing
treatment for incontinence, some patients may find these approaches
helpful in dealing with incontinence:
Self-catheterization If incontinence is
caused by a condition that prevents the bladder from emptying
completely, such as a spinal cord injury, past surgery, or
poor muscle tone, using a catheter can help. A catheter is
a very
thin tube that can be inserted into the urethra to help drain
urine from the bladder. They can be used occasionally or constantly.
If used constantly, it is usually attached to a bag worn on
the leg. The bag collects the urine and is emptied as needed.
Incontinence Products There are numerous
products available that, while they do not control incontinence,
do lessen the effects. These products include absorbent pads,
male incontinence drip collectors, underwear liners, plastic
underwear worn over regular underwear, and disposable or reusable
adult diapers. These products should not be used in place of
treatment. They do not correct the condition, and may lead to
diminished self-esteem, as well as skin irritation and sores.
